» KKU joins Ministry of Science to find geniuses and invites Dr. Teepanis to inspire students (1578 Views)

On May 3-5, 2017, Khon Kaen University and Ministry of Science and Technology organized the 7th SCiUS Forum. The forum is a stage for learning and sharing of academic knowledge for students from all over the country. It aims to find unique scientific projects to submit to international competitions. The event featured a lecture, "Chachiyo’s Formula" by Dr. Teepanis Chachiyo, a Thai scientist who successfully invented a formula that has been searched for 50 years by the world scientists. The opening ceremony was on May 3, 2017 at the Golden Jubilee Convention Center, Khon Kaen University, with Mr. Somchai Tiamboonprasert, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Science conveying the opening address. Dean of Faculty of Sciences, Asst. Prof. Dr. Somkiat Srijaranai, welcomed teachers and students and Miss Chatthida Boonto, Director of Science and Technology Manpower Promotion Section, Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology delivered a reporting speech. Over 600 administrators, lecturers, scientists, teachers, and school students participated.

From the Ministry of Science and Technology’s project to establish science classrooms in schools under university’s supervision, universities are to monitor, enhance and support to the fullest extent in the development of curriculum, especially one aiming at academic and teachers excellence. The objectives are to motivate and develop students to become highly qualified researchers, scientists, or technologists in the future, who will also become key resources for national development. This activity, “SCiUS Forum”, has been arranged for students under the project to present their work and at the same time, the students are able to learn from and share their experiences with their counterparts from other schools. Students’ skills of scientific and technological research, together with presentation skills will also be strengthened in the activity. This is the 7th time the forum has been organized, and about 540 eleventh graders from science streams under this project participated through smart pairing between the university and 16 schools. For the Oral Presentation, 101 science projects entered the competition while the Poster Presentation had 114 applied science projects. The students’ science projects are classified into chemistry, biology, biodiversity, physics and astronomy, environmental science and ecology, mathematics and statistics, and technology and computer.

The event also had another special lecture, “Science, Technology, Innovation and Thailand 4.0” given by Assoc. Prof. Soranit Silatham, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Science and Technology. Another activity was a study trip to learn about resources in science, technology, and culture for students to gain out-of-class experiences.
